In the United States, Black transgender women are horrifyingly overrepresented as victims of these hate crimes.Īs we remember and honor trans communities on TDOR, it is important to pair our memorial activities with action that addresses the root causes of violence and protects those who are made most vulnerable. As with communities of color and other groups who experience multiple layers of marginalization, physical violence against transgender, nonbinary, and other gender bending people is accompanied by higher rates of sexual assault, intimate partner violence, and state violence. Trans activists and allies work to raise awareness of these dangers and galvanize action to end anti-trans violence for the living and the dead. Organizations like GLAAD and the Human Rights Campaign warn that the actual number is likely much higher in the U.S., because transgender victims are often misgendered by authorities or their families and therefore are not included in datasets. That’s the highest death count since TDOR organizers began recording the names of victims, but we know that many deaths go unreported. In 2021, 375 transgender and gender-nonconforming people were murdered worldwide, 46 were killed in the United States, where more than half have been Black trans women. Since then, many have come together on this day to say the names and remember the lives of those who have died in the past year. The first TDOR was observed in 1999 when a group of transgender people gathered to highlight the need for awareness around anti-transgender violence after the murder of Rita Hester, a 34-year-old African American transgender woman who was murdered in her home in 1998.
